SCRTEC 2015 Competitions

UPDATE:  All Competitors will need to check-in at the registration desk upon arrival to campus at least one hour before the start of their competition.  Each competition has been updated with times and locations for each round and competition specific details.  Winners and finalists for the Chamber competition, Mock Band Euphonium, and Mock Orchestral Tuba competition will be announced on the Thursday evening final concert.   Winners and finalists for all other competitions will be announced on the Friday evening concert.  Please see below for locations and times pertaining to each competition.

 

APPLICATION & DEADLINES:

The application deadline for all of the competitions is February 20, 2015

Applications will be open November 1st, 2014

 

ELIGIBILITY:

The South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference Competitions are open to contestants of every race, gender and nationality. Each contestant must be a member of ITEA. All applicants must be registered and present at the SCRTEC 2015 to be held March 19-21, 2015 in Conway, Arkansas. The competitions will begin on Thursday, March 19 at 1pm. Winners of each category will be announced at the evening concert on Friday.  Winners and finalists will be expected to perform on masterclasses during the day on Saturday.

 

JUDGES:

Judges for each competition category will feature prominent members in the applicable field.

 

 

Solo Artist Tuba

Eligibility:  Participants must not be a full-time paid professional (euphonium, tuba, or trombone) in either a performance position or university teaching position.  There is no age limitation.

 

Prizes: 

1st prize - A SCRTEC 2015 championship plaque, performance in masterclass with David Fedderly, and a $300

                    scholarship to the International Euphonium Tuba Festival.

2nd prize - Performance in masterclass with David Fedderly, and a $200 scholarship to the International Euphonium

                     Tuba Festival.

3rd prize - Performance in masterclass with David Fedderly, and a $100 scholarship to the International Euphonium

                    Tuba Festival.

 

Times & Locations: 

The preliminary round starts on Thursday, March 19 at 1:00pm in the Band Room.  This round will be closed to the public and unaccompanied.  The final round starts on Friday, March 20 at 10:00am in Ida Waldron.  This round will be open to the public and accompanied.  The masterclass with David Fedderly will take place on Saturday, March 21 at 9:00am in the Band Room.

 

Repertoire:

Preliminary Round:  Concerto for Tuba and Piano, mvt. I – Eric Ewazen (Southern Music)

Final Round:  Sonata for Tuba and Piano, complete work – Frank Lynne Payne (Shawnee Press)

                          The conference will provide all finalists with a conference pianist.

 

Entry Fee:  $35

 

Solo Artist Euphonium

                    Tuba Festival.

The preliminary round starts on Thursday, March 19 at 4:30pm in the Recital Hall.  This round will be closed to the public and unaccompanied.  The final round starts on Friday, March 20 at 9:00am in Ida Waldron.  This round will be open to the public and accompanied.  The masterclass with Brian Bowman will take place on Saturday, March 21 at 2:00pm in the Band Room.

 

Repertoire:

Preliminary Round:  A La Suite Classique, Movements 1, 2 (no repeats), 3, 7 – Yasuhide Ito (Studio Music)

Final Round:  Concerto for Baritone Horn, Movements 1 & 2 – Martin Ellerby (Studio Music)

                          *NOTE: This work should be performed on the Euphonium, however this is  

                           Ellerby's Concerto for Baritone and NOT the Concerto for Euphonium.

                           The conference will provide all finalists with a conference pianist.

 

Entry Fee:  $35

 

 

Young Artist Tuba

Eligibility: Participants must not be a full-time paid professional in either a performance position or university position.  Entrants must not have reached their 20th birthday as of May 17, 2015.

 

Prizes: 

1st prize - A SCRTEC 2015 championship plaque, performance in masterclass with Andrew Hitz, and a $300

                    scholarship to the International Euphonium Tuba Festival.

2nd prize - Performance in masterclass with Andrew Hitz, and a $200 scholarship to the International Euphonium

                     Tuba Festival.

3rd prize - Performance in masterclass with Andrew Hitz and a $100 scholarship to the International Euphonium

                    Tuba Festival.

 

Times & Locations: 

The preliminary round starts on Thursday, March 19 at 2:00pm in the Room 125.  This round will be closed to the public and unaccompanied.  The final round starts on Friday, March 20 at 9:00am in the Band Room.  This round will be open to the public and accompanied.  The masterclass with Andrew Hitz will take place on Saturday, March 21 at 10:00am in the Band Room.

 

Repertoire:

Preliminary Round:  Air and Bouree – J. S. Bach/Bell (Carl Fischer)

Final Round:  Concertante Allegro – Alexey Lebedev (Friedrich Hofmeister)

                          The conference will provide all finalists with a conference pianist.

Mock Band Euphonium

Eligibility:  Participants must not be a full-time paid professional (euphonium, tuba, or trombone) in either a performance position or university teaching position.  There is no age limitation.  

 

Prize: 

A SCRTEC 2015 championship plaque.  The winner and finalists will be invited to perform in a masterclass with Adam Lessard of "Pershing's Own" U.S. Army Band.  

 

Times & Locations:  

Two live rounds closed to the public.  The preliminary round starts on Thursday, March 19 at 4:30pm in the Choir Room.  Finalists will be posted immediately following the preliminary round and a final round will begin in the Choir Room at 6:00pm after a short deliberation by the judges.  The masterclass with Adam Lessard will take place on Saturday, March 21 at 9:00am in the Choir Room.

 

Repertoire:

Specific excerpts selected by the judges will be available on the stand or you can use your own parts.

Mock Orchestra Tuba

Eligibility:  Participants must not be a full-time paid professional (euphonium, tuba, or trombone) in either a performance position or university teaching position.  There is no age limitation.

 

Prize: 

A SCRTEC 2015 championship plaque.  The winner will be invited to perform in masterclass with the SCRTEC low brass section led by Dennis Nulty.

 

Times & Locations: 

Two live rounds closed to the public.  The preliminary round starts on Thursday, March 19 at 1:00pm in the Choir Room.  Finalists will be posted immediately following the preliminary round (around 3:00pm) and a final round will begin in the Choir Room at 3:30pm after a short deliberation by the judges.  The masterclass with Adam Lessard will take place on Saturday, March 21 at 9:00am in the Choir Room.

 

Repertoire:

Chamber Music

Eligibility:  Participants must not be a full-time paid professional (euphonium, tuba, or trombone) in either a performance position or university teaching position.  There is no age limitation.  Each ensemble must consist of 4-6 members and any combination of tubas and/or euphoniums.  Each member of the ensemble must perform on all pieces during the competition.

 

Prize: 

A SCRTEC 2015 championship plaque.  The winner will be invited to perform in masterclass with Rhythym & Brass.

 

Times & Locations: 

One live round open to the public.   Groups will be judged on performance quality, repertoire choice, and stage presence.  The preliminary round starts on Thursday, March 19 at 1:00pm in Ida Waldron.  The masterclass with Rhythm & Brass will take place on Friday, March 20 at 1:30pm in the Band Room.

 

Repertoire:

Repertoire is to be chosen by the competitors within the guidelines listed below. It is desirable to show contrasting styles and tempi during each round. Ensembles will be judged on the quality of ensemble performance; it is to the benefit of each group to choose repertoire that will best display group musicianship.

 

20 minutes of music maximum. Include the following:

Three contrasting works - complete or partial - one of which must be an original work composed for the instrumentation of the group.
