Dr. Gail Roberston 

University of Central Arkansas

 

Dr. Gail Robertson earned her B.A. degree from the University of Central Florida and a M.M. in Euphonium Performance from Indiana University while serving as graduate assistant to Harvey Phillips. She postponed her doctoral studies at the University of Maryland with Dr. Brian Bowman to perform with the “Tubafours” at Walt Disney World, Orlando where she served as musical supervisor/chief arranger and produced a highly acclaimed CD, “Tubas Under the Boardwalk.” She has recently completed her D.M.A. as a University Distinguished Fellow at Michigan State University studying with Phil Sinder, Ava Ordman, and Ricardo Lorenz. She has taught on the faculties of Eastern Michigan University, the University of Central Florida, Bethune-Cookman University, the University of Florida, Valencia, and Seminole Community Colleges, and remains active as a teacher, adjudicator, composer, arranger and free-lance artist, both nationally and internationally.

 

Robertson currently serves as Visiting Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Central Arkansas where she is tubist in the Pinnacle Brass and teaches the 125 Jazz Ensemble. She is the Chair/Chief Editor of the International Tuba and Euphonium Press, on the Board of Directors of the Leonard Falcone Tuba and Euphonium Festival, the International Tuba and Euphonium Association (ITEA), and the International Women’s Brass Conference (IWBC). She has served as President of the IWBC and as a conference host in 2010 and 2006. She has also served as Euphonium and Membership Coordinator of the International Tuba and Euphonium Association (ITEA) and was the featured artist on the cover of the ITEA Journal (Vol. 38:1, Fall 2010). Two of Gail’s original works have also been featured Gems in the ITEA Journal (Jazz Encounter No. 1 - Gem Series No. 22, Vol. 38:1, Fall 2010, and Allegro et Andantango - Gem Series No. 33, Vol. 41:3, Spring 2014).

 

Gail was recently awarded the 2014 Clifford Bevan Award for Excellence in Research for her document “Restoring the Euphonium’s Legacy as Cello of the Wind Band.” Her original work for brass quintet, Tower Guard Tribute, was honorable mention for the 2014 International Alliance for Women in Music’s Patsy Lu award. In May 2009, Gail recorded a new CD with Dr. Stacy Baker, Alex Thio, and Dr. Deb Eastwood, called “SymbiosisDuo.” SYMBIOSISDUO will release their second CD, “Playground,” in January 2015. Several of the works recorded by the duo were newly commissioned works written especially for the duo. Composers include: Franz Cibulka, Jim Self, James Grant, Christopher Marshall, Brian Balmages, Chris Sharp, Kimberly Archer, T.O. Sterrett, and Phillip Bimstein. In 2007, Gail received Tau Beta Sigma’s highest honor, the “Outstanding Service to Music Award.” She has also been a clinician for the MIDWEST Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, the Florida Music Educators’ Association, the Michigan Music Conference, and numerous ITEA, IWBC, and United States Army Tuba and Euphonium Conferences.

 

Robertson has toured the U.S., Europe, China, and Japan with Keith Brion’s “New Sousa Band," the Brass Band of Battle Creek, the Monarch Brass, the Athena Brass Band, and the Brass Band of Central Florida. She has also performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Ann Arbor Symphony, the River City Brass Band, Jack Daniel's Silver Cornet Band, Euphoniums Unlimited, Symphonia, the Orlando based “Horns and Pipes” Brass and Percussion Ensemble, and SYMBIOSISDUO. Her published works and arrangements are available through GAR MUSIC, Euphonium.com, and Tuba-Euphonium Press. As a Willson Euphonium Artist, Robertson’s euphonium of choice is a Willson 2950TA with a Warburton/Gail Robertson mouthpiece

Dr. Kevin Sanders

University of Memphis

 

Dr. Kevin Sanders joined the faculty of the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music in 2008.  While at Memphis, his students have been highly successful in national and international competitions including the International Tuba Euphonium Association’s competitions and the Leonarde Falcone International Tuba-Euphonium Competition.  In 2014, the University of Memphis Tuba Ensemble released two CDs entitled Axis and Tuba Carols.

 

Dr. Sanders has been a performer and clinician in Europe, Asia, and North and South America.  He has performed with the American Brass Quintet, Detroit Symphony, Memphis Symphony, New Mexico Symphony, Macau Orchestra (China), Spoleto USA Festival Orchestra, Music in the Mountains Festival, New World Symphony, Chicago Civic Orchestra, and the Jeunesse Musicales World Orchestra for their North American and European tours.  As a soloist, Sanders released his debut solo CD, Long Distance, in the fall of 2014.  He can also be heard on the 2011 release of “Radiant Blues” on Mark Records, which includes Charles Booker’s Sonatina for Tuba and Wind Ensemble with the University of Memphis Wind Ensemble.

A devoted educator, Dr. Sanders has authored a play-a-long fundamentals routine for brass, woodwind, and percussionists entitled The Hollywood Warm-Up and co-developed a fantasy-football style website for musicians called Ultimate Musician’s League with Christian Carichner.  He has also served on the board of the Memphis Youth Symphony and Concert’s International and been a featured clinician at the Washington D.C. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference and International Tuba-Euphonium Conferences. 

 

Dr. Sanders has held teaching positions at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, SUNY-Potsdam Crane School of Music, Arkansas Governor’s School, and the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.

Christian Carichner

Iowa State University

Christian Carichner is currently Assistant Director of Bands and Professor of Tuba/Euphonium at Iowa State University.  Previously, Christian was the Assistant Professor of Tuba/Euphonium/Jazz and the University of Central Arkansas. Holding degrees from Ithaca College and Arizona State University, Christian is an accomplished performer, educator, and artist.Christian has performed or taught in 47 different states and 12 countries across the globe. Recently, he was a featured performer at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference and has presented clinics at several regional workshops across the country. Christian has also performed with the Arizona Musicfest Orchestra, the Tampa Tradewinds, the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, Pinnacle Brass, Rhythm and Brass, Proteus 7, Salt River Brass, and has performed with the national tour of the hit Broadway musical Chicago.Christian is also very active in the marching music world. Currently he serves as Brass Caption Head for the Phantom Regiment, a Drum Corps International World Champion organization. He also spent 2006 with The Regiment before becoming Caption Head at The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, leading their brass in the transition to Division I DCI competition from 2007-2011. He also composes, designs, and arranges marching band shows for several organizations, most recently for UCA, Iowa State University, Fort Smith Southside High School, Cabot High School and Conway High School. He is also an active clinician and adjudicator working with Berryville (AR) High School, Novi (MI) High School and judging across the country, most recently at the Louisiana State Marching Band Championships.Christian is currently an advocate for the incorporation of arts entrepreneurship in collegiate arts curriculum, where he believes that in today’s increasingly competitive arts field, an artist must possess the skills necessary to design and implement their own career.
